There’s ‘No Return’ from Matrefakt & Sarah Story’s deep, infectious disco

Last week on BBC Radio 1, I pressed play to a track that NEVER fails to work the crowd. I made it my Dancefloor Moment on BBC Introducing Dance, my radio show which gives a platform to emerging electronic music.

When the clubs were open, I’d often find myself searching for a Matrefakt record during most sets I played. They make timeless, infectious, feel good belters, which are consistently brilliant. They are a trio from Liverpool, and have been championed by BBC Music Introducing in Merseyside, and it was actually my friend, DJ, vocalist and producer, Sarah Story who introduced me to them about a year ago. She told me she’d been working with these producers, and said to keep an eye on them. Sure, enough she was right, and this track they’ve made together is one of my favourite records of 2020 so far.

‘No Return’ captures you with a hooky guitar riff layered with Sarah’s vocals that are chopped up throughout the track. It feels so fresh, but also like it could have been played in The Hacienda during the 90s house explosion. Matrefakt are experts in crafting straight-forward, unpretentious house tracks that get the job done. Their records feel timeless.

‘No Return’ is looking to get a release soon, but you can listen to it here, and I also recommend their EP on Skream’s Of Unsound Mind - which you can hear below.
